SNOW in Dallas & Lake Ray Hubbard ... Yes it's True!

SNOW in Dallas Texas? SNOW ... Really?!? Yuppers, we just had snow & it's been faaaa-reeee-zzzzing with the high being a low 30* and dropping to ~20* at night!!!

That was part of my conversation with a colleague up in Seattle a couple of days ago. Now I know Dallas is known for some HOT summers but here's a lil' hidden secret about North Texas & Lake Ray Hubbard area (Garland, Rowlett, Rockwall, & Heath): We really are blessed with all seasons from the rainy spring days that bring our unique Blue Bonnets & Indian Paintbrush flowers to bloom, to the humid but yet scorching hot summers that occasionally produce amazing thunderstorms, to a beautiful autumn with leaves changing orange and yellow, and a chill ya' to the bone winter with snow & ice! What's weird though, is that we tend to get our snow & ice not only in January but also in February or March! Now don't get me wrong here, temperature for our winters are usually between 60-40* but about 3-4 times during our winter and even during the early spring months we get a snow or ice storm. As a matter of fact, Dallas had a big snow/ice storm last February while we were hosting the 2010 NBA All-Star game!

Because we don't get snow or ice that often, everything tends to shut down! Unlike our neighboring states to the north and north-east, Texans aren't good drivers on the white stuff. Sure we have "Ice Trucks" who lay dirt on the roads but even then we still have a crazy amount of accidents. So when the forecasters say SNOW or ICE is on the way, here's what you can expect:

*Grocery Stores are full of people getting enough food & stuff to keep them entertained while they're condemded to stay home ... it's really quite a sight! I personally load up on munchie foods and stuff to make soups!

*Government Buildings and most Schools & Businesses will be closed or at the very least will have delayed openings!

SNOW in North Texas and in the Lake Ray Hubbard area (Garland, Rowlett, Rockwall, & Heath) is a rare treat! No matter how little the amount of snow we get, you'll see kiddos of all ages out having Snowball Fights, Sledding on Cardboard Boxes, making Snowmen, & you'll even see boats out on the lake with people all bundled up to fish! My family was 1 of the many that bundled up and headed outside to play in the snow! Despite being attached, I was able to get some of my 20mth old sons' 1st snowball fight on video!

Like expected though, our snow & icy weather didn't last long, 2 days to be exact. Temperatures are warming up and by weekend we'll be back in the 50's. Though I enjoyed our SNOW, I'm ready for our warmer weather to come back! But it's still wonderful to drive down the streets and see semi erect snowmen standing in the front yards & I absolutely love hearing my son yell "NOMAN-NOMAN" every time he sees one!

Now let's all cross our fingers for NO SNOW or ICE this February when Dallas hosts SUPER BOWL XLV!!!
